  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

Depth: 9.3m
Visibility: 1m
Number of Sharks: 8
Conditions:  A calm day with very little wind and lots of sunshine

As is written above, today was a calm day with very little wind and lots of sunshine. In other words, a perfect day to go out to sea to experience what the waters of Gansbaai and Kleinbaai have to offer when it comes down to marine life. We launched at 9am this morning and went straight to the shallows to watch the sharks. The visibility was about 1m as our first divers started to get into the cage but it got better and better as conditions were calm. The first shark we spotted today was Thuli, a 3m female we have seen quite a few times already. We saw Thuli yesterday as well and we noticed that she had a new wound on her left flank. It looks like she scraped along something but fortunately the wound is only superficial so it will not impact her too much. Remember that sharks are very resilient animals that usually heal quickly. Most of the sharks we saw today were close to 3m in length but one little shark was standing out with a length of approximately 1.7m! One of the smallest Great Whites you will find as they are estimated to be around 1.5m in length when they are born. The shark that stole the show today is a shark we know all too well, it was little lumpy, a 3.1m female. She breached a few times giving everyone an opportunity to get some amazing shots. We left Joubertsdam at 12.00 to give everyone an opportunity to watch the seals on Geysers Rock. It was quieter at the island than what we normally experience. Remember that the Cape Fur seals that we find here are not true seals but sea lions so they sound similar to sheep.
